FORMAT/RULES:
• Age division for Power Walking competition will be based on participant’s age on October 7, 2024 .
• All Power Walking events will be conducted in accordance with USPWA rules. See Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/USPWA )for updates or for questions email: unitedstatespwa@gmail.com
• Participants must present their Huntsman World Senior Games ID Badge at the venue check-in desk one hour before the start of each race.
• Athletes must not wear clothing that could impede the view of the judges (i.e., the knees and legs must be clearly visible at all times - so athletic shorts or tights must be worn).
• Both a computerized and a back-up timing system will be used.
• Race numbers must be visible on both front and back. Power Walkers will have different color bib numbers. Race bibs should be retained by competitors as they will be used for all events entered.
• Power Walking is a progression of walking steps heel to toe taken so the walker makes contact with the ground with no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact. The advancing leg can be bent as it passes under the body (run/shuffle is not legal). Judges will look for loss of road contact and run/shuffle so competitors can be disqualified if they receive three violations or warnings from three separate judges.
• Loss of road contact in a bent knee form is considered running, not Power Walking.
• No canes, walkers, headphones, cell phones or water bottles allowed during the event.
• Power Walk is a monitored event in which an athlete can be disqualified. Power Walking, while very similar to Race Walking, does not have the same technical requirements.
• One foot must be on the ground at all times. Loss of contact with the ground is forbidden.
• Each advancing foot strike must be heel to toe at all times. Striking with the toe or ball of the advancing foot is considered running.
• Creeping, where the lead toe strikes prior to the heel and knee are bent into a running form is forbidden.
• A slightly bent knee is the accepted form but a bent knee in a running or jogging form is forbidden. Running or jogging mode is forbidden.
• Any violation in the last 100 meters as determined by a single judge is reason for immediate disqualification.
• The advancing leg as it moves forward (and when the heel strikes) the ground; it does not have to be completely locked as it passes under the body. Soft knee is acceptable however; over excessive bent knee is deemed to be in a creeping or running shuffle is not acceptable and subject to disqualification.
• Unsportsmanlike conduct can result in disqualification by the judges, monitors or race officials.
• Disqualification will result when an athlete is judged to be in violation of the above rules in three separate instances by three separate officials or monitors or race director during the course of the race competition.
• Check the Sports Lounge at the Dixie Center for possible clinics.

IMPORTANT NOTE! Power walkers: In response to a large number of comments in the past, we are making a big change this year. For each of the three power walks, we will hold a “Division 1” race comprising those athletes who: 1.) are competing in both the race walks and power walks; 2.) were either the Overall Champion or gold medalist in prior power walks (Huntsman World Senior Games or National Senior Games); 3.) are a male whose prior PW time was 10 minutes/mile or less, or a female whose prior PW time was 11:15 minutes/mile or less. All D-1 athletes will be advised (via email) that they will be competing in a separate power walk (to be staged at the conclusion of the men’s/women’s power walks each day), and will be competing only against each other. It is our hope that this will make the power walks more equitable for all, and will enable more athletes to go home with medals! We realize this may prompt some questions; if you have concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us…and we appreciate your understanding as we refine this process.

MEDALS:
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event for each age division. Medals will be presented at the completion of each event.
