EVENT: Gravel Race

SCHEDULE:
Tuesday, October 7th

COURSE: COURSE MAPS
The course is a 28 mile ride that begins and ends at Gunlock Reservoir. See course map for more details.

Description - Gravel bike races are endurance events that combine the length of road races with the rugged terrain of mountain biking or cyclocross. Here are some things to know about gravel bike races:

Terrain
Gravel races take place on a variety of terrains, including gravel roads, single-track trails, sandy paths, beaches, climbs, and downhills. Courses often use paved roads or single-track trails to connect gravel sections. For the HWSG we will mostly be on gravel, fire type roads.

Distance
The HWSG gravel race will be more of a sprint style. The distances will be 15-40 miles. This may include multiple laps or one big loop. Distances will be based on categories and experience.

Start
At the Huntsman World Senior Games we may start as mass or within groups. If we start within the groups we’ll group similar categories together. If we start in mass, we’ll still group categories together on the start line but release the group as a whole.

Aid stations
There will be aid stations on course. Once we solidify the course we will post aid stations and locations. Racers are responsible for fixing and maintaining their bikes. Please bring gear ( tubes and tire changing materials) to maintain your bikes. No neutral support on site.

Bikes
Gravel bikes are similar to road bikes, but have bigger tire clearance and a slacker geometry to ride more stably over rough terrain. They allow for a more aggressive ride style but slacker geometry. Gravel bikes use drop type handlebars and road bike gearing. You may use mountain bikes to race the gravel event, but absolutely no bar ends or aero bars allowed.

Tires
The type and size of your tires can make a big difference to your ride. Consider how suited your tires are to the course, and whether it's likely to be wet or dry, rough or smooth. Gravel tires tend to be bigger and have knobbier for road style.

Community feel
Gravel events are known for having a community feel and being more relaxed than road races.
