Thanks to a recent decision by the Huntsman World Senior Games staff to sanction the Game’s swimming competition with United States Masters Swimming, world record times will now be recognized.
In prior years the event was designated as a “recognized” event by USMS. As such, record-setting times were only acknowledged in the United States, as were Top 10 times. With sanctioning, all records will be recognized on a worldwide basis by FINA, as will Top 10 times. This is important as in recent years several athletes had eclipsed world records, but have not received their due credit.
Sanctioning will require that all athletes competing in the swimming competition have USMS membership. If athletes already have an annual membership – they are all set. If not, two options are available. Huntsman World Senior Games swimmers may either purchase an annual membership or an event membership. The cost for a Games-specific membership is $15 while the annual membership fee is $40.
After nearly a decade of service, Roy and Carol Stephen will be retiring as the Swimming directors for the Games.
“Roy and Carol’s creativity and dedication to the Games, swimming and most importantly to the athletes, has been a vital part of this meet’s success,” said, Kyle M Case, Huntsman World Senior Games CEO. “We will miss them and we wish them only the best.”
With the Stephen’s stepping aside, the Games is pleased to announce that Cheri and Waid Reynolds are the new directors for Swimming.
“We are excited to have them as directors and they are excited to be involved,” said Merrill Barney, Director of Sports for the Huntsman World Senior Games. “The Reynolds have been part of the Games for a while in other capacities and I think they will do a wonderful job in this new assignment.”
Carolyn Burt and Jan Beutler will continue to act as Games race officials. They are expected to continue doing an excellent job.
The Huntsman World Senior Games is the largest annual multi-sport athletic event in the world and welcomes over 9,500 athletes each year to St. George, Utah every October.
